Metin Oktay

Metin Oktay ( born February 2, 1936 in İzmir, † 13 September 1991 in Istanbul) was a Turkish football player.

Career

Oktay played in Izmir initially at Damlacık, later in Yün Mensucat. He then moved to Izmirspor, where he had noticed the youth coach and was appointed. In his first season at Izmirspor he was charged with 17 -goal top scorer of Izmir Championship. In 1955 he came to Galatasaray Istanbul, where he played the rest of his career, with the exception of 1961-62, in which he played in Italy at Palermo.

Metin Oktay was eleven times top scorer, including six times in the first Turkish league. He scored in his career total of 632 league goals, is therefore the most successful Turkish scorer of all time. At Galatasaray, he was three times champion of Turkish and took four times the national cup. His record of 38 goals in the 1962-63 season was 25 years later by another Galatasaray player, Tanju Çolak (39 goals) broken. Twice he was awarded by FIFA unofficially the Golden Boot Europe. Total Metin Oktay scored in 252 games 217 goals ( ratio 0.86 ) in the first Turkish league, all for Galatasaray. He is by Hakan Şükür (249 goals), Tanju Çolak (240 goals) and Hami Mandıralı (219 goals), the player with the most goals in the Turkish League (now Superliga). With 217 goals he had scored the most goals in the first Turkish league for Galatasaray, until he was caught on August 12, 2007 by Hakan Şükür. Metin Oktay also holds the record with most goals in Derby's city, because he scored against Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş 18 13 goals. He played in 36 A- internationals and four Under-21 internationals. He scored 19 goals and had seven times captaincy.

In 1969, when Galatasaray champion Oktay and scorer, he finished his career. For him there were two farewell games, one in Izmir and one in İstanbul. In Istanbul Galatasaray played against Fenerbahçe 1:1 and in İzmir they lost Göztepe 0:1. The Unforgotten in İstanbul farewell game was that Metin Oktay for a few minutes wearing the jersey of Fenerbahçe and on the other side Can Bartu the Galatasaray jersey. This went on for the fans of both team a wish come true, even if only symbolically.

Metin Oktay was in all respects a model for the youth, because for years he wore the captain's armband at Galatasaray and also both feet knew very well to use. It has entered into an icon of Galatasaray in the story for the fans and is still considered by many to be the best Turkish footballer of all time. His nickname was "the king without a crown " (Turkish: " Taçsız Kral "). After his playing career he became a coach at Galatasaray Bursaspor and assistant coach of Toma Kaleperovic, also went temporarily to the Board. Most recently, he worked as a sports journalist.

The sports club Galatasaray immortalized his name by the sports facilities of the football club were named after him: Florya Metin Oktay Tesisleri.

On 13 September 1991 Metin Oktay died in a car accident.
