Metinaro

Metinaro is the capital of the subdistrict Metinaro in the district of Dili in East Timor.

The place

The place Metinaro lies in a straight line about 18 kilometers east of the provincial capital of Dili, at an altitude of 135 m. Its center is located in the Suco Sabuli, but the settlement extends up to the Nachbarsuco Duyung. Throughout the settlement, there are two primary schools, a pre - secondary school, a police station and a community health center. In the village there is the National Heroes Cemetery in East Timor.

In the village live 4,316 people (2006).

The subdistrict

In Subdistrict Metinaro live 4727 (2010, 2004: 3,409 ). It divides into the two Sucos Duyung ( Sereia ) and Sabuli.

In Nicolau Lobato Training Centre near Metinaro the 2nd Battalion of the East Timor Defence Force FDTL is stationed.

In contrast to the urban sub-districts of Dili, where the majority of Tetum is spoken, saith the majority in the national language Metinaro Mambai. The average age in the sub-district is 18.6 years ( 2010, 2004: 17.8 years ).

44 % of households in Metinaro grow corn, 35 % coconut, 30 % cassava, vegetables 11% and 4% coffee.

It offers an on Metinaro touristic diving areas with a colorful wildlife.

History

In Metinaro there was in 1978 a camp for East Timorese should be relocated for better control of the Indonesian occupation. Until mid-1979 here 40,000 people were detained.

Between July and August 1999, earlier than in the rest of East Timor, most residents Metinaros had left the place due to the wave of violence. Pro- Indonesian militias ( Wanra ) had terrorized the population, 70 % of the town were destroyed.

Since the riots of 2006 there were up to 9,000 refugees in a camp near the Nicolau Lobato Training Centre. The camp was closed in June 2009.

As a result of the parliamentary elections on 30 June 2007 and the subsequent appointment of Xanana Gusmão to form a government, it was in many parts of the country to violent riots and fighting between supporters of the new government and supporters of FRETILIN. On August 22, fought to three hundred with machetes, steel bows and arrows against each other. The police brought the situation back under their control, but the market was completely burned down. Three people were arrested. The next day there was another fight where aufgingen ten houses in flames.
