Metre Convention

The International Metre Convention in Switzerland Metre Convention, is a closed on 20 May 1875 an international agreement in which " to secure Desiring the international agreement and the perfection of the metric system " the 17 signatory States the construction and financing of some institutions - details below - have agreed; a duty to take charge of the metric system by the signatory states is not included in the contract. The contents of the contract was subject to review in 1921 at the 6th CGPM ( Conférence générale des poids et mesures ). Currently (March 2008) 51 States party to the Metre Convention. In addition, the CGPM has 26 " Associate Member States ", which is not fully participate in the financing and are not entitled to vote. The International System of Units ( SI ) 1960 was introduced; the SI has indeed found a worldwide distribution, but is rarely used in the U.S., one of the first signatories countries. The signing is thought since 2000 annually on 20 May, the day of measurement.

The Metre Convention established three institutions:

  • CGPM ( General Conference of Weights and Measures; Conférence générale des poids et mesures ) - a meeting of delegates from all the signatory states at a distance of four to six years
  • CIPM (International Committee for Weights and Measures; Comité international des poids et mesures ) - a management committee, which meets annually in the BIPM
  • BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures; Bureau international des poids et mesures ) - an international center for units in Sèvres near Paris
