Metropolis Building

The Metropolis Building (Spanish: Edificio Metrópolis ) was the former headquarters of a Spanish insurance at the intersection of Calle de Alcalá and Gran Vía in Madrid, Spain.

1905 decided the insurance company La Unión y el Fénix the construction of a new headquarters after the establishment of the avenue Gran Via was decided. It was announced an architectural competition between Spanish and French architects, the brothers Jules and Raymond Février Février won.

The work began in 1907 with the demolition of seven old houses to make room for the new building. The Spanish architect Luis Esteve finalized the work in 1910 and on January 21, 1911 was the grand opening.

Unusual is the finely structured facade and the tower with the dome. Originally there was a phoenix on the dome until 1972 another insurance company called Metropolis acquired the building and the phoenix away in favor of a winged Victoria. Victoria was designed by Federico Coullaut Valera.
