Metropolis of Bessarabia
The Orthodox Church of Bessarabia is the Bucharest Patriarchate under -standing Eastern Orthodox Church in Moldova. Even before 1944, the Orthodox churches in Bessarabia were subject to the Patriarch of Bucharest. However, after the annexation of Bessarabia by the Soviet Union, they had to be part of the Moscow Patriarchate.
In 1992, conflicts arose when a large part of the Orthodox priest in Moldova pleaded again to the Orthodox Church of Bessarabia, Romania oriented. The anlehnende be at Moscow government in Chisinau ( capital of Moldova ) supported the Moscow Patriarchate. 2001, the Moldovan government has been condemned by the European Court of Human Rights for violation of religious freedom.
