Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green

The Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green was a district in the metropolitan area of the British capital London, with the status of a metropolitan borough. It existed from 1900 to 1965 and was in the north- east of the former county of County of London.

History

Bethnal Green was originally a hamlet belonging to Stepney and was raised in 1743 to an independent civil parish in the county of Middlesex. As of 1855, the village belonged to the catchment area of the administration union Metropolitan Board of Works. 1889 reached Bethnal Green as the new County of London, eleven years later, the conversion was followed in a metropolitan borough.

At the foundation of Greater London in 1965 arose from the merger of the Metropolitan Boroughs Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
