Metropolitan Detention Center Brooklyn
The Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park ( Brooklyn ), New York City, is a U.S. federal prison.
Capacity and History
The federal prison was built for 1,000 inmates. It houses male and female prisoners.
It was built for prisoners who were awaiting a hearing in federal court for the Eastern District of New York. These include: Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Iceland and Long Iceland. It was made in the early 1990s in operation. There were local protests because it was feared that the prison operation would overload the infrastructure.
1999 the building was expanded. Today the prison holds 3,000 inmates.
