It connects the city Miami with some of its suburbs and is operated by the local traffic authority Miami -Dade Transit. The Metro Rail is created almost entirely on stilts up to three locations where elevated highways are also being crossed at ground level. Structural, stations and infrastructure are constructed of reinforced concrete; the rails are on slab track. The vehicles are identical with those of the Baltimore Metro Subway, which became operational about the same time.

In June 2012, the Miami International Airport has been connected to the network ( Orange Line ). The connection of the Florida International University in the west of the city and other suburbs to the north is provided. These are two more branch lines in planning. Furthermore, an extension is provided at the southwestern end of the track; this was the South Miami -Dade Busway established in 1997 along U.S. Route 1 as a precursor operation.
