Metterich

Metterich is a municipality in the district of Bitburg -Prüm, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Bitburg -Land.

Geography

The municipality is located in the southwest Eifel about 5 km northeast of the county town of Bitburg. West of the village runs the Kyll, their high surface extends the community. From The 5.6 -acre municipality a comparatively large proportion is used for agriculture with 70%, only 17% are passed by forest. Right on Metterich passes the main road 50 ( Bitburg -Wittlich ). The next junction bathrobes at the Federal Highway 60 is about 5 km away.

History

From an early Roman colonization of the municipality finds evidence of a cremation cemetery and several settlement sites. In the " In calibration " tombs have been found from the Frankish period. Count Sigard left his property in the then " Metriche " place called 844 Prüm Abbey. The Abbey of St. Maximin of Trier from 1200 had estates in Metterich, a mill, which was the rule Bitburg 1729-1740 dutiable. In 1794 the town was divided territorially between the Luxembourg provost Bitburg and the rule Dudeldorf. In 1795 he became the seat of the Mairie Metterich, which passed in the same Prussian mayoralty in 1816. The latter went in 1856 to the mayoralty Dudeldorf, 1927 Official Dudeldorf, which was merged with four other offices in the course of municipal reform in Rhineland-Palatinate to the municipality Bitburg -Land.

In the year 1848 320 inhabitants were recorded in 42 houses in Metterich, in the local mill 17 people were home. 1895 comprised the place already 54 houses and 390 inhabitants. In 1939, the population had dropped to 382 people, but since then has after several swings back to 471 inhabitants ( 2006) risen.

Parish council

The local council in Metterich consists of eight council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Attractions

The Catholic parish church of " St. Eucharius " is a single-nave hall church from the 18th century and has been designated a cultural monument. Worth seeing are furthermore some restored old farmhouses.
