Meudt

Meudt is a municipality in the Westerwald district in Rhineland- Palatinate. It is the second largest community in the municipality Wallmerod.

Geography

The community lies in the Westerwald between Montabaur and Westerburg.

Community structure

The three districts iron, Ehringhausen and Dahlen, together with the local church Meudt Meudt. Ehringhausen between Meudt and cock at the lake near the federal road 8 and has about 40 inhabitants.

History

The first documentary mention in 1097 as muda or tired of the place is one of the oldest settlements in the Westerwald. On the basis of the old name muda or tired it can be assumed, however, that the place is older. Muda refers to an old customs post.

Meudt came in 1564 from the County of Diez to the Electorate of Trier, in 1806, the Duchy of Nassau. In Nassau dynasty from 1809 to 1831, the Office Meudt, later Office Wallmerod.

The Synagogue of Meudt was destroyed during the pogroms of November 1938.

On January 1, 1969, until then independent municipality Ehringhausen was incorporated into Meudt. Today's church was re-formed on 7 June 1969 from the communities Meudt, Dahlen and iron.

Parish council

The local council in Meudt consists of 16 council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 of personalized proportional representation, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Coat of arms

The on January 22, 1938 officially conferred crest is taken from the municipal seal, as they have been out since the beginning of Nassau (since 1816), and tinged with the colors of Nassau. With the key of the local patron saint St. Peter is called.

Culture and sights

Structures

Built in 1596 City Hall is the oldest surviving in the Westerwald. Striking feature is its roof structure with the curly Zwerchhaus. Other attractions include the Gangolfusbrunnen that holds the source of the iron Bach and the Jewish cemetery.

The newly opened since 2006 Gangolfushalle offers modern event space for over 500 seats.

Church

Today's Catholic Parish Church (St. Peter ) is derived largely from the year 1910. Aging is the Romanesque church tower. As part of the then new offices, a historical preservation 's assessment was in 1908 by the local parish created. The site visit revealed that the Roman church tower had to be preserved, nave and choir from a conservation point of view, however, is worthless. Because of the picturesque silhouette of the late Gothic, covered with a pointed roof tent choir, an attempt should be made to its preservation in the new design.

Traffic

West of the town is the federal highway 255 which connects Montabaur and Herborn, and east of the main road 8 of Limburg an der Lahn to Hennef ( victory ). The nearest motorway junction is Montabaur on the A 3 (Cologne - Frankfurt ), about 7 kilometers away. The nearest InterCityExpress stop is the railway station at Montabaur the high-speed line Cologne-Rhine/Main.
