Meulan -en- Yvelines is a commune with 8921 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Yvelines and the Ile- de -France region; it is located about 17 kilometers east of Mantes- la- Jolie, the administrative seat for the district, and is the capital of the canton of the same name. Meulan is to belong to the configured Communauté de communes Vexin -Seine.

The town's name comes from - as in Melun and Milan - from the Latin Mediolanum, the level in the middle. To prevent confusion with Melun (Seine- et- Marne ), the town was renamed in 2010 of Meulan in Meulan -en- Yvelines.

Geography

Meulan -en- Yvelines is a small town on the banks of the Seine, across from Les Mureaux, about 40 kilometers west of Paris. The municipality borders on Vaux- sur -Seine on the east, Mézy -sur -Seine and Hardricourt in the west, and Tessancourt -sur- Aubette and Évecquemont in the north. In the south it is connected by a bridge to Les Mureaux. The municipal area includes two Its islands, the Île du Fort and the Ile belle. Here the river flows Aubette into the Seine. The community is located just south of the Regional Natural Park Vexin français, associated with this, however, as a place of access.

History

Meulan was originally a river port with a Gallic commercial establishment on the border between the north and the Veliocassern Karnuten in the south.

In the 10th century Meulan was the capital of the county of Meulan, with which the community was incorporated in 1204 by King Philip Augustus in the Domaine royal. King Philip I died here on July 29, 1108.

The water areas of Meulan were from 1900 and the Olympics in 1924 the venue for the sailing events at the Olympic Games.
