Meura

( Locally called de Meire ) Meura is a municipality in the district Saalfeld- Rudolstadt, in Thuringia.

Geography

Meura lies in the Thuringian Slate Mountains on the slopes of Sorbitztales in the Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The municipality belongs to the administrative community median Schwarzatal, which has its administrative headquarters in the municipality seat village.

Origin of the name

The name " Meura " is derived from " Mura " or " muere " ( the Old High German terms for "wall" ). It is believed that a close relationship between the lying near Meurasteinen there. The cliffs rise mural on mountain slopes up and form a natural demarcation to Schlagetal.

Another interpretation of the name is attributed to the location of the village: In past centuries Meura was called border town. The district border in the south and east of the community formed a territorial and political walls to other sovereigns.

History

In 1370 Meura was first mentioned in documents as Meire. Economy and infrastructure

The studfarm

In Meura located for many years the largest Haflinger stud farm in Europe. On a total area of 3.5 hectares more than 350 horses are bred, for which extensive pasture areas are used to breaking agricultural terraces on the plateaus of the Thuringian Slate Mountains within a radius of about 15 km around the stud in the summer.

The Horsefarm Meura was founded in 1969 as a state-approved Haflinger breeding farm of the German Democratic Republic. In 1976 it was state owned property. ( † August 21, 2011 born January 27, 1935) led until 1990 it was used by Dr. Siegfried Sendig. Since 1993, the family of the stud Sendig family (FN) recognized by the German Equestrian Federation, recognized training company and certified family-friendly riding since 1992 and mare performance test station on behalf of the Thuringian state government.
