The Miess (Slovenian: Meža ) is a right tributary of the River Drau in Carinthia and Slovenia.

River

The Miess springs north of Uschowa ( Olševa ) near the Maroldalm in the Karawanken in the municipality of iron Kappel in Carinthia. The Valley sweeps first from west to east, turn at Črna / Schwarzenbach to the north and breaks through between Peca ( Peca ) and Uršlja gora ( Ursulaberg ) the Karawanken to continue his run almost back east-west running towards Dravograd ( Unterdrauburg ). Past Prevalje ( Prävali ) The Miess flows according to the place Mežica ( Mießdorf ), flows through the city Ravne ( Good stone) and takes just before the mouth of the river Mislinja ( Mißling ). In Dravograd / Unterdrauburg the Miess flows into the Drava River.

Mießtal

The through by the valley Miess Mežica dolina ( Mießtal ) extends south of the Karawanken and Strojna ( Kömmel ) mountain land on the mountain ridges runs the Austrian- Slovenian border. It was before 1919 a part of the crown lands Carinthia, the Austro -Hungarian Empire. In the wake of the dissolution of Austria - Hungary the valley of troops of SHS - State was occupied and awarded in the Treaty of Saint- Germain this.

As part of the expansion of the Third Reich during the Second World War, the Mießtal (as well as the Lower Styria ) came from April 1941 to end of war under German civil administration. As part of the resettlement policies performed the SS 1941-1943, 3,324 Slovenes were resettled from the Mießtal.

As of 1945, the Mießtal was again part of Yugoslavia and is now one of Slovenia, which became independent in 1991. The valley is part of the Slovenian Koroška (Carinthia ).
