Mezen, Mezensky District, Arkhangelsk Oblast

Mesas (Russian Мезень, scientific transliteration Mezen ) is a small town in north-west Russia. It has 3575 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Geography

The city is located about 215 km northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk on the right bank of the river Messines, 45 km upstream of its confluence with the White Sea. About 4 km north from Messines is the mesas airport.

The town of Messines is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Settlements in the area of ​​today's mesas developed in the first half of the 16th century.

In 1780 the settlements Okladnikowa ( Окладникова ) and Kuznetsova ( Кузнецова ) were combined to town Messines. Mesas became a town and was the center of the homonymous district. This took a half of the then Gouvernementes Arkhangelsk.
