Mıgırdiç Mıgıryan

Mığır Mığıryan or Mıgır Mıgıryan (fully Mıgırdiç Mığıryan Turkish, Armenian Մկրտիչ Մկրյան Mkrtitsch Mkrjan; born September 12, 1882 in Üsküdar, then Ottoman Empire; † 20th century) was one of two athletes in the Ottoman Empire at the Summer Olympic Games 1912 representing Stockholm and thus in its first participation in the Olympic Games. He participated in the disciplines of shot put, discus throw, shot put both hands, pentathlon and decathlon. Apart from him, the country was from athletes Vahram Papazyan, also an ethnic Armenians represented.

Life

Mığır Mığıryan was of Armenian descent and was born into a wealthy family. He grew up in Üsküdar and Istanbul and visited the Robert College in neighboring Arnavutköy ( now a district of Istanbul). One of his classmates was Vahram Papazyan.

As the Ottoman Empire ( Turkish Empire ) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1911 was admitted to the IOC organized by the "official" Olympic Games, the president of the Turkish Olympic Committee Selim Sırrı Tarcan advertisements were on in the local newspapers İkdam and Sabah to to recruit athletes for the 1912 Olympic Games in Sweden. Mığıryan applied on the ads.

He was accepted and took in five different sports disciplines in the Olympic Games in 1912 in part. This Mığır Mığıryan holds the record of most sporting disciplines, who graduated a Turkish athlete in Olympic history.

About his life nothing is known.

Olympic games

In the Summer Olympics 1912 in Stockholm, the two Ottoman citizens and athletes Mığır Mığıryan and Vahram Papazyan represented the only their land and carried the Ottoman flag at the opening ceremony. Both had to be proactive in order to finance their participation costs, as there were no subsidies from the government or the Olympic Committee. While Papazyan received financial support from an Armenian sports club and a charity event, Mığıryans cost of his family themselves could be applied.

In the Summer Games managed Mığıryan all five sports to be completed. In the decathlon against the famous athlete Jim Thorpe he suffered a wrist injury and had to retire.
