Miass

Miass (Russian Миасс ) is a major city in Russia. It is located in the Chelyabinsk region in the central Urals on the banks of the same river Miass and has 151 751 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

The origins of the town date back to the year 1773, when a mining camp was established at its present location. The town grew in the 19th century, first slowly to a gold mining village and market town. 1881, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was completed. It was not until the discovery of gold and metal processing in a big way brought a steep upturn for the place that only in 1926 received its town charter in the 20th century.

Economy and Transport

In Miass there are larger factories in the metalworking industry and in the automotive industry (heavy brand commercial trucks Ural ). Miass is the center of a region with mitteluralischen gold deposits, which are mined in the city environment. The largest gold nugget found here ( on October 26, 1842 discovered ) weighed over 36 kg.

Miass is right on the highway M5, one of the most important Russian East-West axes further than M51 leads from Moscow to Samara, Ufa and Chelyabinsk in the Siberian cities of Omsk and Novosibirsk. The railway line from Moscow and Samara towards Siberia passes through the town.

Attractions

Worth seeing in Miass is the old town with buildings mainly from the 19th, but a few from the late 18th century. Outstanding here is the 1889 -built church of the Holy Trinity with pompous Orthodox trim the interior.
