Michael Apostolius

Michael apostoles (Greek Μιχαήλ or Μιχαῆλος Ἀποστόλης or Ἀποστόλιος; * about 1422 in Constantinople, Opel, † July 18, 1478 in Crete ) was a Byzantine writer, Parömiograph, copyist and teacher.

Biography

About the Youth Michaels there is almost no news. At the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans ( 1453) Michael was gefangenommen and deported. After about a year of captivity, he was released and took the road to Crete, which was under Venetian rule. Soon after, he traveled to Italy, where he attended the Roman Curia of his time, Bessarion, came to know the most influential Greeks. In whose behalf he should be in the Cretan Candia (Heraklion ) as a copyist and manuscript collector, started in 1466 to operate as a Greek teacher. After the death of his mentor in 1472, he made vain attempts to establish itself in Italy as a teacher, and died in Crete after a long illness on July 18, 1478.

Work

His main work is a collection of Greek proverbs ( Συναγωγὴ παροιμιῶν ). Moreover, narrated by him 124 letters, several speeches and epigrams.
