Michael Balint

Michael Balint ( born December 3, 1896 in Budapest as Mihály Maurice Bergmann; † 31 December 1970, London) was a Hungarian psychoanalyst.

Life

Balint studied medicine in Budapest. He went in 1920 to Berlin, where he began his psychoanalytic training with Hanns Sachs. In 1924 he returned to Budapest, where he continued his psychoanalytic training with Sándor Ferenczi. Later, he also acted as editor of his writings. Since 1926 he was admitted as a training analyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute in Budapest. In 1929 he published a work on psychoanalysis and clinical medicine, which made ​​him one of the pioneers of psychosomatic medicine.

In 1939 Balint to England, first to Manchester and later to London. In 1947 he began work at the Tavistock Clinic, where he started together with his future wife Enid Balint, his research at the Family Discussion Bureau. He was elected president of the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1968.

Balint's primary interest was the effect of the early childhood experience, the early mother -child relationship and the development of new therapeutic techniques (eg, focal therapy ).
