Michael Boardman

John Michael Boardman ( born February 13, 1938 in Manchester ) is an American mathematician, with algebraic topology concerned ( homotopy theory, generalized cohomology theories ).

Life

Boardman studied at the University of Cambridge with a Bachelor 's degree in 1961 and his doctorate in 1965 at C. T. C. Wall (On stable homotopy and some applications ). 1966/67, he was instructor at the University of Chicago and 1967/68 he was a lecturer at the University of Warwick. From 1969 he was an associate professor and in 1972 professor at the Johns Hopkins University.

He is known for the introduced in the 1960s by his stable homotopy category. He also dealt with differential topology ( singularities differentiable maps ).

With his doctoral Rainer Vogt ( University of Osnabrück ), he led a 1973 quasi- categories, which were later further developed in particular by André Joyal. In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.

He is a practicing Quaker.
