Michael Chapman (cinematographer)
Michael Chapman ( born November 21, 1935 in New York City, New York) is an American cinematographer and director who also appeared in several films in small roles as an actor in appearance.
Life and work
After training as a cameraman for documentaries Michael Chapman worked in the early 1970s as a camera operator for cinematographers like Gordon Willis ( in the films Klute and The Godfather ) and Bill Butler ( in Jaws ). In 1973, he was for the film The Last Detail with Jack Nicholson in the lead role for the first time in his function of director of photography. Ten years later, 1983, he made his directorial debut with the right turn, Tom Cruise plays one of his first leading roles.
Awards (selection)
- For his work on Raging Bull and The Fugitive was he ever nominated for an Oscar, but could not win this.
- In 2004 he was honored by the American Society of Cinematographers with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
