Michael Dahl

Michael Dahl (* about 1659 in Stockholm, † 1743 in London) was a Swedish portrait and court painter, who was a long time in the British service.

Dahl got his education in his native town in the great painter's workshop by David Klocker Ehrenstrahl. In 1678 he accepted an English merchant in London, but shortly thereafter he undertook a long study trip to Paris. Later, Dahl worked for several years in London, where he had returned in 1682. He quickly developed into one of the most successful challenger for the German -born Godfrey Kneller, who was the most popular painter in the English court circles at this time. From 1685 to 1689 Dahl undertook a further study trip to Italy. In Rome, he painted a portrait of 1687 living there Queen Christina of Sweden. In England Dahl created several commissioned works for the Dukes of Somerset and Queen Anne and her husband.

In England Dahl's paintings, among others in the National Portrait Gallery are visible and in Sweden there is a portrait of Charles XII. Gripsholm Castle.
