Michael Formanek

Michael Formanek ( born May 7, 1958 in San Francisco) is an American jazz bassist and composer.

Life and work

Formanek studied at the California State University. He worked among others as a sideman before 1990 his first album as a bandleader and composer Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Dave Liebman, Fred Hersch, and Attila Zoller: Wide Open Spaces. On his second album Extended animation for the first time worked with saxophonist Tim Berne, who became one of his most important musical partners in the following years.

1994 Member of Bernes Formanek Quartet Blood Count, with whom he recorded several albums. In the late 1990s he toured with Formanek as a duo by the United States and recorded the album Ornery People with him in 1998. In the following year his solo album was released Am I Bothering You?. He also toured with the quartet of drummer Gerry Hemingway through the United States.

When Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival in New York 2000, Formanek his new quartet Northern Exposure, the drummer Jim Black, trumpeter Dave Ballou and saxophonist Henrik Frisk belong. In addition, since the 1990s, he worked as a sideman, among others with Jane Ira Bloom, Uri Caine, Marty Ehrlich, James Emery, Lee Konitz, Kevin Mahogany, the Mingus Big Band, the New York Jazz Collective, Daniel Schnyder, Lafayette Gilchrist and Jack Walrath.

Formanek, who teaches at the Peabody Conservatory Baltimore, took 2010 with Craig Taborn and Gerald Cleaver on an album for ECM.
