Michael Frede

Michael Frede ( born May 31, 1940 in Berlin, † 11 August, 2007 Agios Minas, Greece ) was a German philosopher who dealt in particular with the ancient philosophy.

Life

He completed his philosophy studies in Göttingen in 1966 with the PhD. from there and had since then to 1971 held an assistantship. In 1972 he habilitated with the work " The Stoic logic ." In 1968/69 he was Visiting Lecturer in Berkeley, California, where he accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department in 1971 and was soon appointed it to full professor. In 1976, he moved to Princeton, New Jersey, and in 1991 to Oxford, where he taught history of philosophy in 2005 until his retirement. 1997/98 he returned once for a guest semester than 84 Sather Professor of Classical Literature in Berkeley. After his retirement, he taught at the University of Athens.

While participating in a colloquium in Delphi he drowned 11 August 2007 while swimming in the Gulf of Corinth. He was buried on 14 August in Athens.

Frede was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen, the British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
