Michael Gielen

Michael Andreas Gielen ( born July 20, 1927 in Dresden ) is a German -Austrian composer and conductor.

Life

Gielen is the son of the Austrian theater 's and later director of the Burgtheater Josef Gielen and actress Rosa helmsman, sister of Salka Viertel, Eduard helmsman and Zygmunt helmsman. Gielen's family emigrated to Argentina in 1940. Michael Gielen studied music and philosophy in Buenos Aires and began his career as a coach at the Teatro Colón, where the conductor Erich Kleiber influenced him decisively. In 1950 he went to the Vienna State Opera, where he also worked as a coach and met, among other things, to Herbert von Karajan, Karl Böhm, Clemens Krauss and Dimitri Mitropoulos. From 1960, Gielen was music director of the Royal Opera in Stockholm, in 1969 Director of the Belgian National Orchestra in Brussels and in 1973 Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam for five years.
