Michael Gough

Michael Gough ( born November 23, 1916 in Kuala Lumpur, † March 17, 2011 in London) was a British actor.

Life

Gough was born as a child of British parents in what is now Malaysia. In 1936, he began his career on stage, but came only after the Second World War in a movie, in Marc Allégrets Technicolor color melodrama Restless Blood ( Blanche Fury ) from 1947, on. In the following decade he played mainly historical roles, such as in Anna Karenina or Richard III .. Since 1958 he appeared increasingly in horror films and crime films - partly at the Hammer films so called - to which he by his large and elegant appearance and specially offered by its prominent, bushy eyebrows (for example, together with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in Terence Fisher's Dracula ). As well as great roles he played while with in numerous B movies.

In recent years, his roles were characterized by a special touch of British elegance and loyalty, as Lord Delamere in Out of Africa and especially as Butler Alfred Pennyworth in Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.

1979 Gough received the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Bedroom Farce. In 1988 he was again nominated for his performance in Breaking the code for the same award.

Gough was married four times, including with fellow actress Anneke Wills. His son Simon Gough stepped 1965-1973 also on in some theatrical and television films.
