Michael Gruber (skier)

Michael Gruber ( born December 5, 1979 in Schwarzach im Pongau) is a former Austrian Nordic combined.

The two-time Austrian champion ( Sprint 1999, Gundersen 2005) started for the TSU Sankt Veit im Pongau and recorded in the World Cup a total of twenty-six top-10 places. His best World Cup rankings in 2004, he reached the second place in the sprint in Trondheim and 2003 with third place in the individual event in Val di Fiemme.

His greatest success Gruber at the Olympic Winter Games 2006 in Turin and at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme, where he won the gold medal in the team competition. With the Austrian team, he also won the bronze medal at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City and the bronze medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2005 in Oberstdorf. A single medal at major events was not granted to him, but with the fifth place in the sprint competition and sixth place in the individual event, he reached the World Championship in 2005 outstanding results.

On 27 September 2007 Gruber suffered during training in Pragelato a torn ACL. After several comeback attempts, but hurt his knee, he declared on 1 April 2008 his retirement from professional sports.
