Michael Hamburger

Michael Peter Leopold Hamburger OBE ( born March 22, 1924 in Berlin -Charlottenburg, † June 7, 2007 in Middleton, Suffolk, England ) was a German - British poet, essayist, literary critic and translator.

Life

Michael Hamburger was born into a Jewish family, the son of the professor of pediatrics Richard Hamburger (1884-1940) and his wife Lili Hamburg, born in Hamburg. His brother Paul Hamlyn (1926-2001) was publisher, philanthropist and peer. Hamburger emigrated in 1933 with his family from Berlin to Edinburgh to London. He attended George Watson School in Edinburgh and Westminster School in London and from 1941 studied German and French at Christ Church College in Oxford. 1943 to 1947 he served as an infantryman in the British Army. He was inducted into Italy and Austria. From 1948 to 1952 he lived as a freelance writer and finished his studies. Then he taught until 1955, German at University College London, then at the University of Reading until 1984. During the 1970s he held several visiting professorships in the United Kingdom and the United States will hold.

In English-speaking criticisms of his new books of poetry were often introduced with the phrase " Michael Hamburger, better known as a translator ." His own poetry was more respected in the German-speaking world, although he did not translated this even in his native language, but also made them translated into German by the Austrian translator Peter Waterhouse.

In addition to the poetry itself Hamburg dedicated to his garden in Middleton and in particular the apple breeding, for which he in England in many circles - next to his fellow poet Ted Hughes - was known as his poetry publications. In 1951 he married Anne and Ellen file, which published several volumes of poetry under the pseudonym Anne Beresford. The marriage produced a son and two daughters were born.

Hamburger was a close friend of WG Sebald, who in his neighborhood ( Poring ) lived, him in his English Pilgrimage " The Rings of Saturn" (p. 208ff. ) Put a monument and the Hamburg transferred several times into English.
