Michael J. Bloomfield

Michael John "Bloomer " Bloomfield ( born March 16, 1959 in Flint, Michigan, United States) is a former American astronaut.

Life

Bloomfield 1981 he received a bachelor's degree in engineering mechanics from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1993 and a master's degree in industrial engineering from Old Dominion University.

Bloomfield went through in 1983 his pilot training at Vance Air Force Base and was then used until 1991 as F -15 fighter pilot and instructor at various Air Force bases, including the Bitburg Air Base in Germany. In 1992, Bloomfield to test pilot school at Edwards Air Force Base and flew as a test pilot various models of the F- 16th

Astronauts activity

1994 Bloomfield was selected as astronaut candidate by NASA. Since March 1995, he worked in various areas at the Johnson Space Center.

STS -86

On 26 September 1997 Bloomfield flew as a pilot with the Space Shuttle Atlantis to the Mir space station. Objective of the mission was the separation of the Mir crew member Colin Foale by David Wolf, a spacewalk (EVA ) by Vladimir Titov and Scott Parazynski as well as the supply of the Mir space station with water, spare parts, experiments and other goods.

STS -97

His next flight into space led him on 1 December 2000 with the space shuttle Endeavour to the International Space Station (ISS). The five-member crew brought the lattice structure P6, equipped with solar panels to generate electricity and radiators for cooling, to the station. After docking, the element was removed from the payload bay of the orbiter and connected with three exits to the space station. Only after the hatches were opened and the ISS crew was able to greet the crew of the Endeavour. Just one day later, the shuttle came to return.

STS -110

On his last mission Bloomfield flew on 8 April 2002 as commander of the space shuttle Atlantis into space. Mission task was to bring the grid element S0 to the International Space Station and install. In addition, the Mobile Transporter, which is part of the Mobile Servicing System, was brought to the ISS. Four EVAs were performed while the Atlantis was connected to the ISS.

Bloomfield left the U.S. space agency in July 2007 and shortly thereafter took a position with Alliant Techsystems to. He is currently Vice President of Constellation Systems, responsible for the development of the Ares rocket. He also leads the office of the company in Houston (Texas ).

Michael Bloomfield and his wife Lori have two children.
