Michael Jay, Baron Jay of Ewelme

Michael Hastings Jay, Baron Jay of Ewelme, GCMG, ( born June 19, 1946 in Hampshire ) is a former British diplomat.

Training

Jay was educated at Winchester College, at Magdalen College, Oxford, and at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Diplomatic career

In 1969, Jay worked at the Department for International Development, where he remained until 1981. In this context, he worked among others at the World Bank in Washington and in New Delhi. In 1981, he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, where he worked as a private secretary. After several other stations in various British authorities, he was finally set up in 1996 as a British ambassador to France. A post he held until 2001.

Other activities and honors

In 2006, Jay was raised to the status of a life peer, he bares the official title Baron Jay of Ewelme, of Ewelme in the County of Oxfordshire and sits as a cross Bencher, ie not tied to a party in the House of Lords.

Also in 2006 he received the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George awarded.
