Michael Joseph Savage

Michael Joseph Savage ( born March 23, 1872 in Tatong Australia, † March 27, 1940 in Wellington, New Zealand) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party and Prime Minister from 1935 to 1940.

Savage was born on March 23, 1872 in Australia. In the province of Victoria, he became politically active for the first time. In 1907 he emigrated to New Zealand where he, among other things, as a miner, worked in various professions. He was originally an opponent of the newly formed Labour Party as it was not social enough to him. He was chairman of the New Zealand Federation of Labour.

During the First World War Savage spoke out against conscription. After the war he was elected for the Labour Party, which he had now connected to parliament. During the world economic crisis, he passed through the land, and made a name for himself as a speaker. His reputation secured his party in the 1935 elections the first victory and made him prime minister on December 6. With slight losses he could win the election in 1938.

Before the end of his tenure, he died in 1940 from cancer.
