Michael Matheus

Michael Matheus ( born March 27, 1953 in Graach on the Moselle ) is a German historian.

Michael Matheus studied after graduating from the Friedrich- Wilhelm -Gymnasium ( Trier), history, political science and German literature at the Universities of Trier, Bonn and Münster. After state exam 1981, he was a PhD with the work Trier at the end of the Middle Ages. Subsequently, he was a research associate of Medieval History at the University of Trier. From 1986 to 1988, Matheus Fellow of the DFG and the German Historical Institute in Rome. In 1990 his habilitation at the University of Trier of Medieval History and Historical Regional Studies. 1990/91 he was a guest lecturer at the GHI in Rome, followed by a teaching post at the University of Rome " La Sapienza " joined. After working as a university lecturer at the University of Trier in 1993 he became Professor of Medieval History at the University of Essen.

Since 1994 he has been Professor of Medieval and Modern History and Comparative Regional History at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. From 1994 to 2003 he was and from 2013 he is again 1 Chairman and Director of the Institute of Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz. From October 2002 to September 2012 he was director of the German Historical Institute in Rome. Since September 2011, he also belongs to the Directorate of the Rome Institute of the Gorres Society at ( RIG ). Since October 2012, he has been Professor and Head of the workspace Medieval and Modern History and Comparative Regional History at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz again. 2013 he took over the presidency of the German Study Center in Venice.

His research focuses on the constitutional, social and economic history of Germany and Italy in the high and late Middle Ages, the city's history, the history of wine, the history of technology, the history of the university, the streets and pilgrims research and historiography. He was dedicated to his 60th birthday a hard step.
