Michael Noonan

Michael Noonan (Irish Mícheál Ó Nuanáin, born May 21, 1943) is an Irish politician of the Fine Gael and was several times minister. He is currently the Minister of Finance.

Biography

Noonan was first elected in 1981 in elections to the 22nd Dáil Éireann for his party in the lower house of the Irish Parliament.

During the 24th Dáil Éireann, he was appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Garret FitzGerald in December 1982 as Minister of Justice for the first time in a government. This office he held until February 1986, then became part of a reshuffle Minister of Industry and Trade. In addition, he was energy minister in January 1987 after it came to a crisis within the coalition government of Fine Gael and the Labour Party. In the elections of 1987, the Fine Gael ultimately lost the government majority, so that the FitzGerald Government was replaced on 10 March 1987 a single-party government of Fianna Fáil led by Prime Minister Charles Haughey.

Subsequently, he was opposition spokesman for finance policy. During the 26th Dáil he held from 19 July 1989 to 11 February 1992, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Marine.

When it came to the coalition government of Fianna Fail and Labour Party on 15 December 1994, he became the new Prime Minister John Bruton to the Minister of Health in the so-called rainbow coalition of Fine Gael, Labour and Democratic Left. This office he held until the end of the coalition government on 26 June 1997. Subsequently, he was again financial spokesman of the opposition.

After the fall of Bruton as leader of the Fine Gael 2001, he became his successor. However, his party enjoyed in elections to Dáil Éireann on 17 May 2002 landslide losses as they lost 23 of their 54 seats. Noonan drew the consequences, resigned as party leader and was replaced as such by Enda Kenny.

Most recently, he was on 21 October 2004 to 29 April 2007 Chairman of the House Committee on Audit (Committee of Public Accounts ).

As of June 2010, succeeding Richard Bruton, he was back opposition spokesman for finance policy.

Since March 9, 2011 he has been Minister of Finance of the government of Enda Kenny.
