Michael Ondaatje

Michael Ondaatje ( pronunciation [ ɒndɑ ː tʃi ː ], born September 12, 1943 in Colombo, Sri Lanka ) is a Canadian writer and poet Dutch- Tamil- Sinhalese ( Burgher ) origin. In 1954 he moved with his mother to England in 1962 to Canada, where he later took Canadian citizenship. He is the brother of the writer, philanthropist, adventurer, former entrepreneur and former participant in the Olympic Games Christopher Ondaatje.

Ondaatje received his BA (Bachelor of Arts) at the University of Toronto and an MA (Master of Arts) at Queen 's University in Kingston ( Ontario). The mid-1960s, he settled in Toronto; 1971 to 1983 he taught at York University and then at Glendon College in Toronto. On November 8, 1988 he was awarded the Order of Canada, the highest Canadian award bestowed.

His novels consist of " snapshots" of interconnected scenes he explores linguistically rich detail. In particular, Ondaatje's not early, or not exclusively poetic works of The Collected Works of Billy the Kid and Coming Through Slaughter show a picture and metaphorical language that is strongly influenced by his background as a poet. Permanent change of narrative perspective and time, and the plot lines characterize these works even more than Ondaatje's later novels.

The Amor asteroid ( 6569 ) Ondaatje was named after him.
