Michael Reiterer

Michael Reiterer ( born September 29, 1954 in Innsbruck) is an Austrian diplomat.

He was from January 2007 to the end of 2011, the first Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. Immediately prior to his post in Switzerland, he was deputy head ( messenger ) of the European Commission Delegation in Tokyo. His first job in the European Commission was the organization of ASEM (Asia Europe Meeting). In the Austrian foreign trade service, he was Deputy Trade Commissioner for South Africa and Japan, worked at the Permanent Missions of Austria to the GATT and the EU and was deputy head of department for integration and trade policies of Austria Chamber of Commerce.

Academic career

Michael Reiterer studied law at the university of his native city of Innsbruck ( Dr. jur., 1978) and subsequently earned a MS degree in international relations at Johns Hopkins University, Bologna Center (1979 ) and at the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI ) in Geneva (1985). In 2005 he completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck for International Policy and has taught at various universities.

EU delegation to Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein

Since January 2007, Michael Reiterer was the first Head of the European Union Delegation for Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The delegation was opened by Commissioner Benita Ferrero- Waldner, the then reigning Swiss President Micheline Calmy -Rey, and the Secretary of State of the Principality of Liechtenstein, Rita Kieber -Beck, on 3 April 2007. At the end of 2011 Reiterer has left Switzerland. His successor as ambassador to the EU, the Briton Richard Jones.
