Michael S. Hart

Michael Stern Hart ( born March 8, 1947 in Tacoma, Washington; † 6 September 2011 in Urbana, Illinois ) was an American writer and founder of the Gutenberg Project.


Hart pioneered the book - digitization. For the idea to put books on the net freely available, he was inspired as a student. On 4 July 1971 the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, he received a copy of the Declaration of Independence. He typed the text from the same evening, and finally put it over the network from the University of Illinois online.
