Michael Sata

Michael Sata ( born 1937 in Mpika ) is a Zambian politician and, since September 23, 2011 President of Zambia.

First professional year

Sata worked as a police officer, on the railways and in the union before he went into politics in 1963. He worked in the United National Independence Party up to the governor of Lusaka in 1985, where he earned a reputation as a man of action. He was also a deputy in the National Assembly.

Turning politicians

As the end of Kaunda 's dictatorship loomed, he and others founded the Movement for Multi Party Democracy, in which he was a close associate of Frederick Chiluba. After the election in Zambia in 1991, he became Minister only for the local governments, then for work and then for health. He reformed the health system. In 1995 he was Minister without Portfolio and organizing secretary of the MMD. The break with the MMD came when Chiluba Levy Mwanawasa recommended as his successor and was able to prevail as the MMD presidential candidate for the election in 2001.

Presidential Candidate

Sata left the MMD and founded the Patriotic Front (PF) as its presidential candidate, he took up in 2001. It was a failure. In this election, he scored only 3.4 percent of the vote and the PF won only one seat in the National Assembly.

The election in 2006 was for him completely different. As a presidential candidate, the PF he could unite not only 29.37 percent of the vote, the second best result, but also for his party 44 seats in the National Assembly, which thus became the second strongest political force in Zambia. This victory won Sata as populist who attacked the economic reforms Mwanawasa and also him personally sharp. He not only made poverty in Zambia in general, but specifically Chinese investments as in Chambishi or Maamba and the miserable working conditions there on the topic.

On September 20, 2011 Sata won the presidential elections in Zambia.

During his tenure, allowed to settle Sata critical judges and intimidated other opponents of his policy. He also maintains good relations with Zimbabwe's dictator Robert Mugabe.

Private life

Sata is Catholic, married to a doctor and has eight children with her. He lives in Rhodes Park Lusaka.
