Michael Sauer (athlete)

Michael Sauer ( born August 27, 1941 in Recklinghausen ) is a former German triple jumper and journalist.

Career

Michael Sauer grew up in osthessischen Fulda. As a 17 -year-old football player at FV 1910 Horas and the Fulda Turnerschaft of 1848 he presented with a width of 13.63 m in the triple jump unexpectedly a Hessian youth record and found as to this athletics discipline. As a soldier, he started for TSV 1860 München, 1963 for which he won his first title at the Indoor Championships with a distance of 15.34 m. With the beginning of the study Sauer joined the USC Mainz, whose jersey he won 1963-1978 a further 18 league titles (outdoor and indoor ). In the Indoor Championships in 1968, he also won the long jump with 7.70m. His outdoor best jump is at 16.65 m erected in 1967. In the hall he stood next to a number of national and European records two world records, in 1965 with 16.35 m and 16.77 m in 1968.

Sauer 1967 Universiade champion and participated in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, where he narrowly missed the finals with a width of 16.02 m. 54 times he was employed in Athletics countries fighting. Especially in hall competitions he reached good results: At the European Championships in 1966, he finished second with 16.35 m at the European Championships in 1968, he was fifth with 16.37 m at the European Championships in 1968, he was seventh with 15.86 m, at the European Championships 1969, he was fourth with 15.89 m at the European Championships 1970, he was fourth with 16.39 m at the European Championships in 1971, he was eighth with 15.94 m and at the European Championships in 1972 in sixth with 16.27 m. In 1974 he was awarded by the German Athletics Association of the Rudolf Harbig Memorial Award.

After his last German Indoor Championships 1979, the newspapers described the 37- year-old as " Methuselah of hops ". Later, various championship came in the seniors added at national and international level. Sauer was 1993-1997 President of the University Sports Clubs Mainz, in 2009 received an honorary membership, and since November 2012 Chairman of the Foundation for the USC Mainz.

His professional career took him to various internships at newspapers for Südwestfunk and 1971 for ZDF. There he started as a Personal Assistant to the ZDF director Prof. Karl Holzamer and later ran from 1975 to 1984, a weekly sports magazine for children called whistle. By early 1985 he became head of the volunteer training at the ZDF and was from mid-1985 until his retirement in 2001, station manager of the ZDF. 2004 was the retired colonel and the reserve still in the frame of an eight- month military exercise as press staff officer at SFOR in Sarajevo. He was from 1996 to October 2011, Vice- President of the Association of the German Bundeswehr reservists eV and editor of the monthly magazine Loyal security policy. In November 2011 he was elected Chairman of the National Committee of the Rhineland-Palatinate Reservists Association. Since the winter semester 2008, he perceives a sport history teaching position at the University of Mainz. Sauer is the author of numerous fitness books.

In 1997, the Federal Cross of Merit he was awarded the band.
