Michael Snow
Michael James Aleck Snow, CC ( born December 10, 1929 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a Canadian avant-garde film director, experimental filmmaker, painter, sculptor, writer, photographer and jazz musicians.
Life and work
Michael Snow was educated at Upper Canada College and the Ontario College of Art After his studies, he visited 1953/54, Europe and then worked until 1956 for a small Toronto film production company. In the same year he had his first exhibition at the Avrom Isaacs 's Greenwich Gallery in Toronto. Since then his work has been shown at exhibitions throughout Europe, North America and South America. It was followed by 1962 to 1964, a stay in New York, he returned back to Toronto in 1972. Between 1961 and 1967 he created several works in different media, based on the silhouette of a young woman. A series of works by eleven sculptures were shown at Expo 67 in the pavilion of Ontario.
He was with several films as a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department of Film Acting: represent New American Cinema and at the Documenta 6 in 1977 as an artist. His works have been shown, among other City in 2000 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and 2005 in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Michael Snow is one of the most influential experimental filmmaker. Among his best known public works are the sculptures at the Sports Arena Rogers Centre and the sculpture Flight Stop at Eaton Centre, which Canada Goose is inside the shopping center.
Originally he was a professional jazz musician and has composed soundtracks for his films, including New York Eye and Ear Control itself.
As a pianist, he performed as a soloist and with other musicians, particularly in the group CCMC, which he co-founded, in North America, Europe and Japan. Snow occurs regularly in Canada and internationally on recorded more than half a dozen albums since the mid-1970s. He is also internationally known as a sculptor and draftsman. Snow was with the Canadian film artist Joyce Wieland (1931-1998) married.
