Michael Stewart (ice hockey)

Michael Stewart (* 30 May 1972 in Calgary, Alberta ) is a former Austrian- Canadian professional ice hockey player who among other things played in his career with the EC VSV in the Austrian Hockey League. Since February 2011 he has been head coach for the same club.

Career

Stewart played for the Michigan State University when he was drafted overall by the New York Rangers in the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 in the first round as the 13th player. However, he never made ​​the jump to the National Hockey League, but played in the American Hockey League for the Binghamton Rangers and Springfield Falcons and in the International Hockey League for the Detroit Vipers. The season 1996/97 he spent with the team Canada.

At 28, the defender gave his NHL dream to finally and moved to Europe. After a season with the Frankfurt Lions in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, he joined the Carinthian traditional club EC VSV to Austria. Since then he has won with the VSV twice the Austrian Championship title. After the departure of Herbert Hohenberger he was captain of the VSV.

In 2010 he ended his active career and became an assistant coach with the VSV. Since 10 February 2011, he held the coach of the VSV and thus succeeds Johan Strömwall, who resigned from the post due to lack of success. In spring 2012, Stewart left the VSV and joined the following season as coach to the fishing penguin Town of Bremerhaven, who played in the 2nd Hockey League.
