Michael Stuart Brown

Michael Stuart Brown ( born April 13, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, USA) is an American geneticist.

In 1985 he received along with Joseph L. Goldstein received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine " for their discoveries concerning the regulation of cholesterol metabolism ", as well as the William Allan Award and the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. In 1981 he was awarded a Gairdner Foundation International Award.

Brown studied at the University of Pennsylvania Medicine ( MD degree in 1966 ). Then he was at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (then UT Health Center, Dallas ), where he explored the cholesterol metabolism by Goldstein. In particular, they discovered the important role of LDL receptors. Their discoveries led to the development of statins (lipid lowering agents).

Brown is a professor at Southwestern Medical Center, University of Texas ( WA ( Monty ) Moncrief Distinguished Chair in Cholesterol and Arteriosclerosis Research).

In 1976 he was awarded the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry, 1979, with the Richard Lounsbery Award. In 1984 he was awarded with the Goldstein Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University. In 1987 he held the Keith R. Porter Lecture. In 1988 he received the National Medal of Science.
