Michael V Kalaphates

Michael V. Kalaphates (Greek Μιχαὴλ Καλαφάτης, the sealers '; † August 24, 1042 ) was the nephew and successor of the Byzantine Emperor Michael IV and the adoptive son of his wife Zoe. His nickname refers to an earlier work of his father.

He owes his accession to the throne on December 11, 1041 his uncle John Orphanotrophos, but was then sent directly to a monastery. The relationship between Michael and his adoptive mother Zoe at first seem to have been quite good, but soon developed a deep dislike Michael her. The contemporary sources, the fact that Zoe was formally over him, and was called in first proclamations, have infuriated him to. 18-19. April 1042 he banished hence Zoe in a monastery. However, the promulgation of this decision on 21 April led to a popular uprising, as the population did not want to accept the deportation of the legitimate empress. Michael was deposed, blinded and sent to a monastery, where he died. The population of Constantinople held it for an ordinary usurper because he could show no dynastic legitimacy for the throne. This seems to have led the people to approve his dismissal.
