Michael White (clarinetist)

Michael White ( Dr. Michael White, born November 29, 1954 in New Orleans ) is an American clarinetist of the Oldtime Jazz.

Life and work

White comes from a musical family; to his ancestors include the jazz bassist Papa John Joseph and clarinetist Willie "Kaiser" Joseph, about which he knew little, however, initially. Influenced him an aunt who played classical clarinet. White first studied Spanish and played with Don Paulin (1975 ), the Young Tuxedo Brass Band (1979) and at Preservation Hall with Kid Sheik Cola. He also appeared in the show One Mo 'Time. He completed his foreign language studies with a doctorate and formed his own trio and 1981, the Liberty Jazz Band, the The New Orleans Hot Seven. He toured several times in Europe and Japan and also appeared at the Village Vanguard. Wynton Marsalis took him to his recordings for The Majesty of the Blues ( 1989).

White teaches Spanish and Afro- American music at Xavier University of Louisiana. In the United States, he is a media effectively advocate for the traditional jazz because of his academic position. He is considered to Digby Fairweather as a central figure of the recent New Orleans revival. Its historic collection of jazz from New Orleans, including with sheet music of Jelly Roll Morton, was destroyed in the floods after Hurricane Katrina.
