Michael Woods (politician)

Michael J. Woods (Irish Mícheál Ó hUadhaigh, born December 8, 1935 at the County Wicklow ) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and long-time minister.

Biography

Woods worked after graduation as a consultant for marketing and managing director of the company. His political career began as the candidate of Fianna Fáil in 1977 with the first elected as a member of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ), in which he first represents the constituency of Dublin Clontarf and since 1981 the constituency of Dublin North - East.

On 1 July 1979 he was appointed by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Jack Lynch to the Minister of State to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Defense and thus assumed as a " junior ministers " for the first time a government official. In the subsequent government of Prime Minister Charles J. Haughey, he was then between 12 December 1979 and June 30, 1981 Minister of Health and Minister of Social Welfare. Under Haugheys successor Albert Reynolds, he was on 11 February 1992, first Secretary of the Navy. After Reynolds January 12, 1993 reshaped the government, Woods was the fourth time the Minister for Social Welfare. At the same time he took over after the resignation of ministers of the Irish Labour Party on 18 November 1994 and again the office of the Minister for Health and retained this office until the end of Reynolds ' term of office on 15 December 1994.

After re- election victory of Fianna Fáil, he was appointed by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern on 26 June 1997 to the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources in the Cabinet. In January 2011, Woods announced that he would no longer stand as a candidate in elections to the Dáil in the spring of 2011.
