Michael Yeats

Michael Butler Yeats ( born August 22, 1921 in Thame, Oxfordshire, † January 3, 2007 in Dublin) was an Irish politician.

Life

Michael Yeats was born in 1921, the son of Irish poet William Butler Yeats in Thame, Oxfordshire. After finishing school, he studied at Trinity College, Dublin history, which he passed with distinction. Yeats then continued his studies and was admitted to the bar. However, he did not practice, but rather turned to politics. He joined the Fianna Fáil, the largest party in Ireland in. From 1951 to 1954, from 1961 to 1981 he was a Senator in Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Irish Parliament. From 1969 to 1973 he was its chairman, called the Cathaoirleach. From 1973 to 1979 he was also a member of the European Parliament.

Yeats was married to the Irish singer and harpist Gráinne Yeats. Of their four children, a son and three daughters were born. The Irish painter Anne Yeats is his sister.
