Michalis Tremopoulos

Michalis Tremopoulos (Greek Μιχάλης Τρεμόπουλος, Mikhail Tremopoulos, born March 3, 1958 in Serres ) is a Greek journalist and politician. He was elected in the European election in 2009 as the first and only deputy of the environmentalists / Greens in the European Parliament and a member of the Group of the European Green Party. On February 1, 2012, he issued his mandate to Nikos Chrysogelos.

Life

Tremopoulos grew up in Thessaloniki, and studied law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Social Sciences at Goddard College in Vermont / USA.

Since 1981 he has worked as a journalist for various media outlets, among others for the newspapers " Thessaloniki" and " Macedonia " for radio and television stations. He dealt mainly with issues of environmental protection, consumer protection, human rights and the Balkan policy. He also gave courses in journalism and ecology.

Political career

Tremopoulos engaged since 1975 in the environmental movement in Greece. He was Chairman of the Association for the Quality of Life ( 1978-1982 ) and in 1982 founding member of the Green Movement of Thessaloniki.

In 1998 he was selected for the "Ecology solidarity " in the Connection list Synaspismos in the Departmentsrat of Thessaloniki.

Tremopoulos engaged in Greece and internationally in numerous civic initiatives, movements, and organizations for environmental protection, defense of cultural heritage, peace and social solidarity, human and civil rights.

With a call Tremopoulos seized with another in 2002 took the initiative to form the so-called "Ecological Forum", the members of various green groups and local environmental movements to a common table and the founding of the party brought ecologists / Green on the way. Tremopoulos belonged the 18-member Panhellenic Council of the party and was its leading candidate in the European elections in 2004 and 2009. during the 2009 European elections, the party won 3.49% of the vote and won a seat in the European Parliament, the Tremopoulos took the only Greek green MEP.
