Michel Camilo

Michel Camilo ( born April 4, 1954 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a contemporary pianist and composer in the jazz and classical genres. In addition, he is active as a producer and has won several Grammys and an Emmy Award (The Goodwill Games Theme).

Biography

Camilo was born on April 4, 1954 in Santo Domingo. He participated in the local National Conservatory classical piano lessons at the age of 16 years a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. In 1979 he moved to New York. There he joined after receiving two Latin jazz albums ( " Why Not? " And " Suntan / In Trio" ) in 1985 for the first time in Carnegie Hall. Since then he has been touring in various occupations by the U.S., the Caribbean, Japan and Europe. In December 1987, he started his career as a conductor of classical music. He led the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic in works by Rimsky -Korsakov, Ludwig van Beethoven, Dvořák and an original composition. From 1987 to 1992 he took over the musical direction of the Heineken Jazz Festival in the Dominican Republic.

In the period between 1988 and 1990 he published three very successful jazz albums ( " Michel Camilo ", "On Fire" and "On The Other Hand " ) and first worked with major labels (Sony or Columbia) together.

In the nineties he worked with renowned pianists Katia and Marielle as well as with Dizzy Gillespie and issued the " Rhapsody for Two Pianos and Orchestra", also the albums " Rendezvous" with Dave Weckl (drums ) and Anthony Jackson ( b ), " One More Once " ( with Big Band ) and " Thru My Eyes " with Anthony Jackson and John Patitucci, Lincoln Goines ( all b ), Cliff Almond and Horacio " El Negro " Hernandez (both drums). 1998 his Piano Concerto No. 1 at the first "Latin - Caribbean Music Festival " in " J. F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts " in Washington, DC premiered. Camilo worked here - as well as in the recording of the Piano Concerto - with the " National Symphony Orchestra" under the baton of Leonard Slatkin.

In duet with the renowned Spanish flamenco guitarist Tomatito Camilo which in a great tradition (see Bill Evans and Jim Hall ) took in 2000 the album " Spain" on the title of " Best Latin Jazz Album " at the first ever advertised Latin Grammy Award (2000 ) won. In 2001, he took up teaching - for example, at the Berklee School of Music and at MIT on. In August 2003, Camilo was a week at the legendary jazz club the Blue Note eponymous label Concerts to present on the double CD album " Live at the Blue Note " is a cross -section of his life's work. He played in the classic jazz trio with H. Hernandez and bassist Charles Flores. The album won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2003.

In January 2005, the album was released " Rhapsody In Blue", which he recorded together with the Orquestra de Barcelona i Nacional de Simfònica Catalunya. After an acclaimed concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2005 together with Tomatito both took on a second album under the title "Spain Again", released in May 2006.
