Michel Chapuis (Organist)

Michel Chapuis ( born January 15, 1930 in Dole ) is a French organist.

Life and work

From 1946 Michel Chapuis participated in Paris in the courses of Edouard Souberbielle at the Ecole César Franck. In 1950 he became a pupil of Marcel Dupré at the Paris Conservatory. In 1951 he won first prize in organ and improvisation. He was organist at Saint- Germain l'Auxerrois, Saint- Nicolas-des -Champs, 1964 at the restored by Alfred Kern Organ of Saint- Séverin, then at the choir organ of Notre -Dame de Paris and in 1995 at the historic organ Palace of Versailles. Since 1956 he was a professor at the conservatories of Strasbourg and Besancon, 1986-1995 at the Conservatoire de Paris. He holds organ academies throughout Europe, the USA and Japan.

As an organist himself Chapuis dedicated especially the French and German music of the 17th and 18th centuries. He played a recording of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, François and Louis Couperin, Nicolas de Grigny, Jean Titelouze, Jean -François Dandrieu, Louis -Nicolas Clérambault and Louis -Claude Daquin. As a member of the Commission supérieure des Monuments historiques since 1967, he is committed to the preservation and reconstruction of historic organs.
