Political career

Daerden grew up in a socialist family, but began his political career as a consultant until the powerful politician and leader of the Liège PS André Cools. First, Michel Daerden spent a few years as Alderman of Ans, deputy and senator. During the internal conflict of the Liège hp, the end of the eighties and the early nineties between Cools and his opponents ( including Dehousse, Happart, Mathot or Van der Biest ) was held to Daerden however, had already distanced himself from his political mentor and tried a take a neutral position. Therefore, he could get to the leadership of the Federation of Liège hp, with a mission to calm things down.

In 1994, towards the end of the legislative period, Daerden then was called as minister of scientific research and as a successor to Jean -Maurice Dehousse (PS ), who had assumed the mayor mandate in Liege, the government Dehaene I, Jean -Luc Dehaene. In the government Dehaene II 1995-1999 Daerden assumed responsibility of transport. There he had to, inter alia, the planning of the high-speed lines to the Netherlands and to Germany (HSL 4 and HSL 3) or to take over the national airline Sabena, Swissair care.

After the 1999 elections, Michel Daerden first came on to the regional and later to the Community level. By 2009, he was Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the Walloon Region and the French Community in the governments under Elio Di Rupo, Jean -Claude Van Cauwenberghe and Rudy Demotte or under Hasquin Hervé, Marie Arena and Rudy Demotte, where he had a special fondness had for the finance and budget.

Since 1993, Michel Daerden mayor of Ans, but prevented his ministerial position since 1994, the effective performance of his duties. It was especially the local elections of 2006, when he an absolute majority for the PS in Ans reached 4150 preferential votes ( 52.76 %), which made him immensely popular in Belgium. An interview that he had given the RTBF in a triumphant state, became an Internet phenomenon and sparked the so-called " Daerdenmania " (see below). This result could Daerden at the federal elections in 2007 and local elections in 2009, where he landed the absolute record of 63 580 preference votes, confirm.

After the regional elections of 2009, the coalition of Socialists (PS) and center humanists ( cdH ) was on Walloon level, however, the Greens ( Ecolo ) expanded. This meant that some ministers, including Daerden, the regional level had to leave. Thus Michel Daerden was initially in the Van Rompuy I Government under Herman Van Rompuy and appointed since November 25, 2009 in the government Leterme II under Prime Minister Yves Leterme to the federal Minister of Pensions and cities.

After he had held in Dutch on 8 January 2010, in a seemingly drunken state, in the Senate a speech, Bart De Wever (N -VA) demanded his resignation; Daerden protested that he had been sober.

In the formation of the government Di Rupo Daerden lost his ministerial post and met now easier than parliamentarians. On 16 March 2011 a vote of no confidence against him was initiated in his home town of Ans. Thus Daerden lost his position as mayor and decided to leave Ans and settle in the neighboring village of Saint -Nicolas. He nonetheless announced plans to run for the office of mayor in terms of the local council elections of October 2012 there.

Michel Daerden was commander of the Order of Leopold.

" Daerdenmania " and controversy

The personality of Michel Daerden produced a split image in the public mind. In 2006, after his election victory in Ans Daerden appeared in apparently drunk for an interview appointment with the RTBF. This video was a short time later distributed on the Internet and sparked there a phenomenon ( the so-called " Daerdenmania " ) from which helped Daerden to an extremely high popularity in French-speaking countries ( home and abroad ). In the media, he has since been referred to as the " Gainsbourg politics ". Michel Daerden, however, claimed that his way of speaking - an extremely slow flow of speech with a strong accent Liege - is due to psychomotor problems and dyslexia.

Daerden was generally regarded as an extremely charismatic personality, which had a high talent for self-promotion. So he gladly gave himself close to the people and led, for example, under the slogan "Je vote pour papa" ( German: " I vote for Dad " ), by which he meant himself, the campaign for the regional elections of 2009 In 2007, he took a own. music CD to. Daerden also had its own fan club and had many followers in social networks.

His critics accused him that he was acting populist and discredited by his appearance, the entire political class. Especially in Flanders this is regularly reviewed so. As Daerden addition to his daughter Aurore, who wore a curve -fitting Cleopatra costume, was clad in December 2009 as a Roman Emperor photographed for the magazine Paris Match, he had to reinsert criticism in the media and in politics.

His profession as a company auditor, he no longer officially exercised since 1994, has led to some criticism. The fact that the office of father and son Daerden who specialized to work in inter-municipal (ie, associations of municipalities) as a company auditor, in which they themselves or political friends of the PS were represented, had triggered an ethical debate on the neutrality of the office.
