Michel-Gabriel Paccard

Michel -Gabriel Paccard (* 1757 in Chamonix, † 1827 ) was a Savoyard doctor and alpinist.

After completing his medical studies in Turin, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia - Piedmont at that time, he worked as a doctor in Chamonix. His passion for botany and minerals led him along with Horace - Bénédict de Saussure, who initiated the competition for the first ascent of Mont Blanc. Paccard launched in 1783 together with Marc Theodore Bourrit a first, unsuccessful attempt to climb. 1784 was followed by several experiments with Pierre Balmat. On August 8, 1786, he finally reached with Jacques Balmat the summit of Mont Blanc, the highest point in the Alps. A statue in Chamonix recalls Paccard.
