Michel-Jean Sedaine

Michel -Jean Sedaine ( born June 2, 1719 Paris, † May 17, 1797 ) was a French dramatist.

Life and work

His father was Jean Sedaine (* 1650 ), a master mason and architect, maître maçon architecte. His mother was the Jeanne Petitpas.Michael -Jean had an older brother and six sisters. Even Michel -Jean Sedaine worked as a bricklayer until he attracted the attention of his employer, a builder, who took him under his students and later even entrusted him with the education of his grandson, the famous later painter Jacques -Louis David. After some minor poetic attempts such as " Epitre à mon habit", which he published in two collections (1752 and 1760 ), he turned to the opera, in that time, in contrast to the strict rules of the classical opera of the 17th century, Italian music, the dramatic musical comedy, came to bear.

From his texts to which François -André Philidor Danican, Pierre- Alexandre Monsigny and André- Ernest- Modeste Grétry wrote the music, are best known:

" Le diable à quatre ", " Le roi et le fermier ", " Rose et Colas ", " Aucassin et Nicolette ", " Richard Coeur de Lion ", " Aline, reine de Golconde ", " Guillaume Tell." Greater importance have his two comedies, which have survived in the repertoire of the Théâtre français, and him a seat in the Académie française ( seat 7 ) enlisted: " Le philosophe sans le savoir " ( 1765 ) and "La gageure imprévue " ( 1768 ). His' oeuvre choisies " were repeatedly issued.

With Denis Diderot, he shared his views on the drama. Both shared a friendship.
